Abstract and Benefits

In 2007, the KM Cluster and the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME) will co-host the 2nd Knowledge Management in Education Summit in Waltham, MA.

This two-day event is the follow-up to the first ever KM in Education Summit which was held in December 2002 in San Francisco. This first event of its kind brought together experts and practitioners from across the education sector to discuss KM strategies, processes, and technologies applicable to education communities from K-16 and beyond.

This event will examine how KM practices have evolved in the education sector over the past 4 years, what types of evidence we have to illustration improvement in outcomes, and why these efforts are even more important than ever. Presenters will include those from administration, teaching, policy-makers and other practitioners who at the forefront of KM-related efforts focused on the education sector.

As with the first even 4 years ago, we will capture the richness of this event through the publication of, in both printed and online versions, a monograph that summarizes the content of the 2-day Summit, including key aspects of the presentations as well as participant and panel dialogs. Like the original monograph, this will be of enormous benefit to the educational community at large since there are so few studies, other than anecdotal, that describe the stunning value of knowledge management in education.

The first monograph, KM in Education: Defining the Landscape, was distributed in hard copy to over 2,000 people in the education sector (attached). It has been downloaded by over 3,000 leaders worldwide, and is posted on hundreds of websites throughout the world. It is recognized as a seminal KM in education work.

Our goal is to transfer the insights generated at this Summit to all those education and enterprise leaders who are interested in the ways in which knowledge management can be applied to the educational process. The outcome will be an increased understanding of the value for building knowledge-based organizations across K-20 education organizations and life-long learning.
